Andrew Syred – SEM photos

Enormous marshmallows, Claes Oldenburg sized fanned sculptures and tightly coiled bundles of hay. These are the associations I have when I saw these photos taken scientist Andrew Syred with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) of everyday, tiny objects like salt and pepper, a threaded needle and the lowly mascara brush. Zoomed into with incredible clarity they take on other worldly characteristics and make us realize the beauty in even the smallest, mundane objects in our lives.

See even more photos and read about the process here.
